LADY MAE’S LOOK
Katherine Kelly, who had often sported a modern blonde look in other roles, adopted a much darker hair colour to play the wealthy lady of leisure, Lady Mae.
‘We wouldn’t have wanted her blonde because there wasn’t much blonde dye around in that period,’ explains Konnie. ‘There was always henna about, but the only blondes around would have been natural blondes and that’s a difficult look to achieve. Dark hair was the right option for that character, because she is trying very hard to be classy. When someone tries hard to distance themselves from their true background, they often overcompensate, and that’s what we tried to do with Katherine Kelly’s character. Lady Mae makes such a big effort because she desperately wants to be up there with the in-crowd, and that shows in her style.
‘Luckily, Katherine had already dyed her hair for a play she was in when she started doing the show, so it worked in our favour.
‘Katherine has a really interesting face and she knows exactly what works for her. It’s brilliant to work with her because she has a versatile look and you can transform her quite easily, which is great fun.’
